How to Avoid the Flu this Winter

Every flu season is claimed to be worse than the year before with different flu strains coming at us from different countries. For this reason, it is a very good idea to take steps to flu-proof your body. If your immune system is weak, you are more susceptible to catching a cold, which could then develop into the flu.

Practice good hygiene

Washing hands is a part of daily life. However, in the lead up to and during influenza season, vigilance should be taken with hand washing. The correct way to get rid of germs is to wet hands and lather for 20 seconds and then rinse. Do not share towels or drinking and eating utensils with someone who has the flu. Always wash hands before food preparation, after sneezing or blowing your nose and after using the bathroom.

Eat the right fruit and veges

To help fight off influenza, you can give your immune system a boost by eating antioxidant laden vegetables and fruit. Pineapple, mango, berries, capsicum, and citrus are all loaded with Vitamin C. Another good choice is golden kiwi fruit. Dosing yourself up with these fruits and veges can help lessen flu symptoms.

Catch up on sleep

Lack of sleep can affect your immune system which will then make you more susceptible to catching colds and flu. Try to turn the lights down low and avoid watching television or using the computer for at least half an hour before bedtime.

Get physical

Doing any form of physical activity is likely to be the last thing you would want to do if you are suffering flu symptoms. If the mere thought of doing exercise sends you snuggling deeper under the blankets, then you may have to think again. Moderate exercise can help the body’s white blood cells move into the bloodstream. Never do any form of extreme exercise when trying to combat the flu. Moderate exercise will boost your fitness and mood levels leading to a quicker recovery.

Make sure you take enough recovery time

Whether you work in the fast paced corporate world or are a mum running around after her children, the recovery time will be the same. People who rush back to daily duties too soon, will end up having to take more time off to recovery fully. If you head back to your tasks too soon, you may also spread the dreaded flu amongst those you come into contact with.

If you are over 65 or are already suffering from a serious illness, you should consider getting the flu vaccine. Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your options.
