Samgyeopsal Date at Home During Quarantine

The hubby and I do a lot of things together. We find good restaurants, eat out, watch TV at night, travel, or just spend time with the kids. Occasionally, we have our date nights. But ever since the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) to combat Covid-19, we haven’t gone out. Instead, I resorted to homecooking to bring excitement to family meal times. One time, we had a samgyeopsal date for lunch in honor of the K-Dramas that we have been watching lately.

Getting Hooked with K-Dramas

Our regular TV fare before was mostly composed of crime dramas like Law and Order SVU, CSI, FBI, as well as FBI Most Wanted. We are also avid followers of superhero series like Flash, Green Arrow, Super Girl, and Legends of Tomorrow. The important thing is, we watch them together.

But now, hubby and I have been hooked with watching Korean dramas together. It started with What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, starring Park Seo-joon and Park Min-young. It is light-hearted and cute and it was highly entertaining. At the end of the day, it was something that we needed — a dose of romantic-comedy for the kilig feels.

Then we discovered the wonderful world of Crash Landing on You starring Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin. We were in love with the show as well as Korean food and how they eat — with gusto. Every time the actors would eat on-screen, we were like awwww… and then cook a pack of ramyun with some kimchi.

DIY Eat All You Can Samgyeopsal Date

Now that we are on quarantine, we found a way to still have at least a few minutes together enjoying our favorite food.

We still had some black bean paste stored in the refrigerator as well as dried shiitake mushrooms and garlic. I ordered organic lettuce from the Fresh Start Natural Store in Bacolod City, and these were delivered to our home. How efficient and safe!

Our simple spread for our samgyeopsal date. It’s pork chop instead of bacon.

As for the pork, I ordered from The Butcher’s Daughter. However, they didn’t have bacon slices available that time. Since theirs is the only one I knew that could deliver small orders, I picked an alternative—pork chop. It’s not sliced very thinly but it’s still pork so it tastes the same.

At this point in the Covid-19 outbreak, we learn not to be picky and enjoy what we have.

So, samgyeopsal date it is!

A Few Minutes of Alone Time

I finished cooking around 12noon, took a few food photos, and called hubby. The difference with this date is that it’s lunchtime, we are not dressed, and I am still wearing my apron. I didn’t have time to really make the date set up and get changed in time. Remember, I still have kids to feed.

But we still consider this a date because it’s just the two of us at the dining table, enjoying Korean food. And hubby adores my cooking, so he is already very happy. Mama cooks and Papa eats we are.

After about 20 minutes (their usual lunch time is 12:30pm), I called the kids and the four of us ate together. But they only had the grilled pork with their rice.

We have to make do so that hubby and I can have a date. And we still enjoyed that moment. No pictures of us though—just the food!

Couple’s Date

A couple’s date is not just about dressing up and going out to a restaurant. Date night is encouraged for couples who could not seem to have their “alone time” together.

The idea of being on a date is being intentional in spending time together–unadulterated, unplugged (a struggle for us), unpretentious. Of course, there should be unending romance. For us, our common denominator is FOOD. We are food lovers and we are both adventurous with our tastes.

The World of the Married

Right now, we are watching The World of the Married. I said I wouldn’t because I couldn’t take the injustice and hubby doesn’t like it.

But now, he is more interested in it than I am. We are already on Episode 7 and we are wondering how this will end. So I guess we will finish this series, too. There’s not much eating here though, so we are not as inspired to keep eating Korean food. haha So one samgyeopsal date is enough. In this show, there’s just so much cheating and betrayal. Ugh.

However, hubby likes studying people because he is an empath. He always wonders about how people feel and how they think. This is why The World of the Married got him hooked.

When I cook, it has been my practice to give hubby the first serving. It’s my act of service.

Meanwhile, I want to encourage everyone to stay safe and be careful. If you are married, stay faithful. It’s not only about Covid-19 but other STDs. Read: Stop the Spread of Disease: Stay Faithful

Note: We bought the black bean sauce at the Metro Store, Ayala Malls Capitol Central.
