Lighting Up Heritage: San Diego Pro-Cathedral Lighting Project

Heritage took center stage in Silay City on January 12, 2026, as the San Diego Pro-Cathedral lighting project was unveiled. That evening, the church revealed its newly illuminated exterior, celebrating faith, history, and a shared sense of identity.

The gathering brought together church members, local leaders, and Negros Power employees. The atmosphere felt warm and reflective. More than a visual upgrade, the moment reinforced the importance of preserving cultural landmarks.

Silay City, known as the “the Little Paris of Negros,” is proud of its historic character. The San Diego Pro-Cathedral stands at the center of that legacy. This year adds deeper meaning. The church marks its 100th anniversary, while the Parish of San Diego celebrates 250 years since its founding in 1776.

The program began with an opening prayer and blessing led by Rev. Fr. Angelo J. Ansula, the parish priest. His message set a solemn and hopeful tone. Shortly after, Mayor Joedith Gallego addressed the crowd. He explained why illuminating the church matters to the community.

Engr. Bernard Bailey Del Castillo of Negros Power delivered the turnover message next. He highlighted cooperation and shared responsibility. The parish priest formally accepted the project, reflecting trust among partners.

Rev. Fr. Ansula emphasized that the church represents more than a physical structure.

“May this light that shines upon our church remind us of hope, truth, and the values we hold dear. This beautiful illumination serves as a reminder of our unity and commitment to uplift our community’s spirit.”

San Diego Pro-Cathedral Illumination and History

As the countdown began, excitement grew. When the lights finally turned on, the church transformed the night skyline. The illuminated façade became a focal point for photos and quiet reflection.

The San Diego Pro-Cathedral is the second largest church in the Diocese of Bacolod, after San Sebastian Cathedral. At night, its presence feels even stronger. The illumination highlights not just architectural beauty, but also centuries of faith and devotion.

This heritage lighting initiative showed how collaboration strengthens identity. The church, the local government, and Negros Power worked together to support cultural heritage tourism and community pride.
