Electricity rates in the Visayas are seeing an increase this summer due to higher demand and lower power supply. This surge in rates has caught many consumers’ attention. According to the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP), Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) prices nearly doubled in March 2025, and the trend has continued into April. This rise directly affects what consumers pay.
What’s Causing the Increase in Electricity Rates This Summer?
There are two key reasons:
1. Power Plant Outages
Several coal and natural gas plants went offline due to planned maintenance or unexpected issues. This led to less available electricity in the system.
2. Higher Power Demand
The extreme summer heat caused a 5.9% surge in electricity demand in the Visayas, with total consumption hitting 13,670 MW. More households and businesses are relying on cooling appliances like air conditioners and fans.
With less supply and more demand, prices in the WESM jumped by 95.5%, which led to higher electricity bills for consumers. This increase in electricity rates this summer has resulted in higher costs across the region.
Important Note for Negros Power Consumers
Even though total electricity rates have increased, it’s important to understand:
- 💡 Negros Power’s distribution charges have not changed.
- 💡 The recent rate hike is due to generation costs, which go directly to power suppliers and not to Negros Power.
- 💡 Negros Power continues to offer one of the lowest electricity rates compared to other distribution utilities (DUs) in the country.
In short, none of the recent increases result in additional income for Negros Power.

How You Can Lower Your Power Bill This Summer
To help manage costs, Negros Power shares these practical energy-saving tips:
- ✅ Use energy-efficient appliances with Energy Star ratings.
- ✅ Turn off and unplug electronics and lights when not in use.
- ✅ Use electric fans together with air conditioners. This helps circulate cool air efficiently, so you don’t have to set the aircon on “high.”
- ✅ Close curtains or blinds during peak heat hours to block out sunlight and reduce indoor temperature.
- ✅ Set your aircon thermostat to a comfortable setting — not too cold. If you’re in a room without much activity or equipment generating heat, 24°C is often cool enough. You stay comfortable while using less electricity.
Help Your Wallet and the Power Grid
While power rates have gone up due to market conditions, smart energy habits can help reduce your bill. By cutting down on unnecessary usage, you’re also helping the overall power system manage demand better.
Together, we can stay cool, spend less, and support a more reliable and sustainable power supply for everyone.
