Negros Power is taking proactive measures to safeguard its power distribution network following the December 9 eruption of Mount Kanlaon. The eruption brought ashfall to portions of Bago City and the Municipality of Murcia, posing significant challenges to the company’s infrastructure. Here is how Negros Power is handling their operations despite the Kanlaon eruption this Christmas season.
“We are committed to providing reliable power to our customers, even in the face of natural disasters,” said Engr. Mervin Dalian, Head of the Network Development and Operations Group at Negros Power.

Kanlaon Eruption: Challenges from Ashfall
Ashfall from volcanic eruptions can severely impact power distribution systems. The risks identified by Negros Power include:
- Insulator Flashover: Ash contamination can lead to insulator failure and power outages.
- Overloading: Accumulated ash can add weight to power lines, increasing the risk of damage.
- Structural Damage: Ash buildup can weaken poles and other light structures, heightening the risk of collapse.
- Tree Falls: Trees heavily laden with ash can fall onto power lines, causing widespread outages.
- System Malfunction: Ash ingress into HVAC systems may block intakes, reducing performance and affecting critical systems in substations.

Mitigation Efforts
To address these challenges, Negros Power initiated water-flushing operations to clean its facilities. By December 22, the company had achieved significant progress:
- 450 Pin Insulators Cleaned: Primary and feeder line insulators have been washed to remove ash contamination.
- 130 Pin Insulators Replaced: Damaged insulators were replaced to ensure reliability.
This represents a 77% accomplishment rate, with efforts ongoing to complete the cleaning of all affected facilities.
Negros Power has also implemented measures to protect its substations and critical infrastructure from ash ingress. These precautions aim to ensure uninterrupted power supply despite the ongoing environmental challenges.
Commitment to Safety and Reliability
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of our employees and the reliability of our power supply,” Engr. Dalian emphasized. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take all necessary steps to protect our facilities and customers.”
Looking Ahead
Negros Power’s swift and strategic response highlights its dedication to delivering reliable electricity, even in the face of natural disasters. Through continuous monitoring, maintenance, and preventive measures, the company is working to minimize disruptions and maintain a stable power supply for its consumers.
By prioritizing both infrastructure and customer needs, Negros Power remains steadfast in its mission to provide dependable service, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.
